The Case study will outline the merger between Moon Power and Sun Bright to become Galaxy International. The organization structure of both companies is currently functional and remains in a functional hierarchy post-merger. The goal of the horizontal merger is to create synergy between the two organizations: Moon Power and Sun Bright. When compared to Sun Bright, Moon Power currently has a weaker competitive advantage compared to the market. Sun Bright is advancing in their innovative approach to information technology programs which has a positive impact on product pricing. Sun Bright is in a rural location with access to more land and has a political edge in the small town. While Moon Power is stronger than Sun Bright in our investment approach and consumer reach. Moon Power is in an urban location with a higher population density per square mile than Sun Bright. Post-merger Moon Power and Sun Bright become Galaxy International with the goal of accomplishing the following:

  • Increase market share (higher productivity in the market)
  • Reduce competition
  • Increased profits through gained competitive advantage.

Galaxy International's goal is to provide clean distributed power to consumers, install innovative technologies related to power distribution, and increase customer satisfaction while simultaneously maintaining profitability.

  • The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Moon Power will become the President of Galaxy International post-merger because they have the largest consumer base.The CFO (Chief Finance Officer) at Moon Power will lead the Accounting and Finance Team of Galaxy International because they have a well-managed investment portfolio for power and high performing derivatives.The CIOat Moon Power will step down to oversee the middle management team in the role of: Director of Information Technology - Network and Applications and report to the CIO of Galaxy International (former Sun Bright CIO). Sun Bright is ahead of the innovation curve regarding Network Security and enterprise application management. The applications will be new for former Moon Power employees.
  • There will be a significant downsizing of employees of Moon Power:
    • 50% of Accounting and Finance employees will remain on board
    • 25% of the Information Technology employees will remain on board
    • 25% of the Human Resources Team will remain on board
    • All displaced employees will receive a severance package and receive outskilling training and support.

The presentation will cover an analysis of the current and future organization structure and culture as well as an analysis of human capital. Provided in the presentation will be the key concepts of how to maintain a positive culture, who is responsible for the culture and behaviors, what the workplace environment will be like and how to achieve this. The human capital analysis will hone in on the need to encourage a learning organization, how to achieve this type of organization and how to generate systems thinking for a successful merger. A key gear in the system will be culture, diversity, and inclusion and its importance to building strong, effective, and efficient teams. The presentation will conclude with recommendations on how to successfully implement the merger.

The top three recommendations are the change management approach, motivation of the team from top to bottom, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. In the recommendation regarding change management, the integration plan and communication are discussed in detail. In the motivation recommendation, a discussion on how to motivate the team and organization is covered, based on McClelland's 3 Needs Theory. To finalize the recommendations, the most significant recommendation is discussed: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This is the most significant because it is how the organization will build their innovative teams and is a foundational element of how Galaxy International will shape organizational behavior and culture under its new structure.
