The cases are consistent in deferring to religious institutions on matters that involve the interpretation of church doctrine or matters of church government. This causes issues with academic freedom of faculty especially when religious doctrine intersects free speech. When interpreting employment contracts which conflicts arise, should the contracts be interpreted under church law or civil law? Is institutional freedom of religion or individual freedom of speech greater?
