The CEO of an area credit union is looking into ways to ramp up bank robbery training after an employee denied an attempted bank robber

The CEO of an area credit union is looking into ways to ramp up bank robbery training after an employee denied an attempted bank robber on Wednesday. Washtenaw Federal Credit Union president and CEO Jason Matley said it's fortunate no one was injured in the incident about 4 p.m. May 4 at their 242 S. Mansfield St. location. Police said a man entered the building and presented a note requesting a large sum of money. However, the employee at the location refused to produce cash and the suspect fled. No weapon was seen or implied. "Our policy does not state that employees handle it that way," Matley said. "I think the employee was caught up in the moment and more shocked than anything else." Matley said he wasn't aware that the teller handling the incident said anything, but knows from surveillance footage that she turned away from the suspect. Based on the video, he believes the suspect may have panicked and fled. Tellers are supposed to provide what is asked of them in a bank robbery, Matley said. He said that employees received robbery training in 2015, but the institution plans to go over training with employees again and review the training for potential improvement going forward. Although Matley said he joined the credit union last year, employees of more than 15 years didn't know of any other robbery attempts. "It's important to know this is an isolated incident," he said. Ypsilanti police Lt. Thomas Eberts said no one has been arrested yet in the matter. Police declined to release the surveillance video as of Friday. The suspect is described as a black man, about 6 feet 4 inches.

Consider training as a central part of human resource management, and please answer the following questions:

  1. How might the general principles of learning be applied to better understand why the teller did not follow company policy regarding robberies?
  2. Select a training strategy that you believe would be most appropriate for re-training employees about bank robberies. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of this form of training and why you think it would be the most appropriate in this context.
  3. Now assume the role of manager of the bank. Beyond re-training, what would be your approach to this situation? Your goal: to prevent or reduce the likelihood that bank protocols and policies (regarding robberies) will be violated in the future.
