Jim Drysdale, camp director of Summer Sport Camps for the past four years, has just been informed that the camp's aquatics director of seven years, Stacy, has left to start her own camp. Jim realizes the amp must have a competent person to supervise aquatic activities, and knows he must immediately create and post a job announcement. However, since Stacy has been the swimming director for seven years, Jim does not know exactly what her job entails. He has basically relied on Stacy to know her job and allowed her a great deal of autonomy. However, knowing he needs to create a job announcement, he puts one together from memory and posts it to a local online job service. In the announcement, Jim includes the position title, the required qualifications, the details of the job, and the hourly pay rate, and lists himself as the contact person for further information.

Jim receives several interested applicants and sorts through their various credentials. He chooses to interview three individuals whose experience and credentials most closely match the position's duties and responsibilities. The first, Casey, has been a lifeguard for several seasons at Jim's camp. Jim knows Casey is a good worker, but is not sure if Casey is capable of taking on the swimming director's added responsibilities. A second candidate, Julie, is a former aquatic director who, after leaving the workforce 10 years ago to raise her 2 children, wants to get back in the business. Jim wonders if Julie is ready for the demands of the 50-hour-a-week position. The final candidate, Martin, was the swimming director at a camp in another state the previous year. However, Jim has heard "unofficial" reports that staffers at Martin's previous camp had behaved inappropriately toward campers, though no legal action has yet been initiated. Unfortunately, Jim has been unable to get in touch with the out-of-state camp's director to check on Martin's credentials or ask specific questions about the situation. The director is out of the country for the next week and has no access to emails or phone calls. Jim has to make a decision within the next two days, in order to hire a swimming director in time for his camp's opening.
