s events etc. This causes variations in the demand for parking which requires a degree of preplanning on organizing the parking Marshalls. But those variations could be predicted if the event booking system is integrated.
The biggest problem really is that a lot of data is sitting in disparate sources,

Collating all that information to work out how occupied a street is at a certain time of day is a manual task that took four days.
In April, the council decided that it needed a better overview of parking trends, so that it could direct drivers to streets with low occupancy. It also wants to integrate its events booking system with the Parking Services Unit to enable better prediction, scheduling and rostering of Marshalls. To do this, it wants to migrate three years
worth of parking data and event booking records into an existing departmental data warehouse. To analyse and visualise that data, it aims to use QlikView
s in

memory business intelligence solution. This can greatly accelerate the speed with which the Parking Services unit can interrogate historical data to identify trends.
We hope to return the data within about half an hour,
says Ballings.
Furthermore, it wants to allow the unit to integrate the data with its geographical location systems, to enable creating a heat map of parking bay occupancy.
The council wants to use this data to roster and deploy parking marshals in busy streets, to tell drivers where they could find a better parking spot.

s more expensive for us to manage the process of issuing a ticket or to reduce business activities due to traffic of people circling for a parking space,
says Ballings.
Instead

we far prefer an adequate number of marshals to interact with delivery companies, visitors, and other motorists in the area to try and encourage them to change their parking behavior by telling them where they're more likely to find available space.
Deploying marshals in busy spots can improve the occupancy of parking spots in less busy streets. The council wants to give parking marshals real

minute trends. Marshals will access real

time data using their own mobile devices.
The council wants to eventually install sensors in parking bays in popular streets

that record when a car enters and leaves the spot. Drivers can access that data through a smartphone app, which shows them which spots are free right when they need it

We hope to get a much greater level of understanding as to how parking bays are used. We have found that vehicles parking at

am stay for just over an hour, whereas cars at

pm tended to stop for just five or

minutes. When that integration takes place, Marshals will also be able to use the app themselves to direct traffic in real time and in future
