The class that I took that I had to exercise strategic learning was the Math117. Being my first session at Chamberlain University and having to adjust to the 8 week sessions was very challenging for me. The Math 117 was a self-pace class, not that it was a hard but there was so much work to be done on a weekly basis which was overwhelming. Down the road I came across some problems that were very challenging and at some point, I felt like I would have been better off taking the class in person. My greatest fear was to fail the class considering that to pass the class one needed to have a grade of A or B. I told myself several times that I wasn't going to fail the class, so I choose to become strategic. I started working on math assignments every single day every single day spending about 3-4 hours. I spent long nights working on the problems, my professor was very accommodating, and he answered all the questions in a timely manner and was always willing to explain in detail, he offered other sources which were very helpful. I made sure I attended the review sessions that were offered by the school. In the end, I passed the class with an 'A' grade. According to Potter, Perry, Stockert, & Hall (2017), teaching and learning are inseparable. A teacher has to have the knowledge about subject and patient teaching condition in order to implement individual with guidance, learning pace and resources to accomplish the learning goal.

Beaten, Kyndt, Struyven, and Dochy (2010), outlines student's approach to learning style. Students with a surface approach (strategic learners) are triggered by afraid of failure and intention of keeping out of trouble with as little effort as possible. Their learning styles are limited to selective memorization. Students make an effective use of space and time (strategy) to gain maximum grades (motive).

As nursing students, it is our goal to help patients become better learners by using deep learning to achieve their goals.
