The Commonwealth establishes the Renewable Electricity Supply Commission ('the Commission'), in order to address the issues facing the National Electricity Market (the NEM) as more and more renewable energy is included into the traditional coal and gas-fired electricity generation system. The Commission has a limited term of five years, given that at the end of the five years there will be a new National Electricity Market (NEM 2.0).

Under the Renewable Energy (Grid Integration) Act 2022(Cth)the Commission has powers to investigate existing renewable energy generation facilities, to alter the terms of the contract for the supply of electricity into the national grid by electricity generators, investigate fossil fuel-emitting electricity generators, and make binding decisions in relation to CO₂ quotas.

To head the Commission, the government appoints Justice Malia Merrington, presently a Judge of the Admiralty Division of the Federal Court for the lifetime of the Commission. Justice Merrington has been appointed for her knowledge of contracts for sales of commodities within the Admiralty division, and because of her personal friendship with the current Chief Justice, the Honourable Redmond Merrington, who also happens to be her father-in-law. Justice Merrington is currently under investigation for misuse of Commonwealth property, as she has repeatedly utilised a Commonwealth car to meet dockside workers in her side practice as an admiralty lawyer, including a witness of a case that is to come before her in the Admiralty division in December 2022.

Dead Energy has been notified by the Commission of the binding decision pursuant to the Renewable Energy (Grid Integration) Act 2022(Cth)to reduce his CO₂ footprint from the current 10g/day to 1g/day, and if this target cannot be met within 6 months then his contract for electricity supply will be cancelled.
