The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated public-health measures restricting movement and limiting physical contact with others have significantly altered the daily routines of Canadians. Adapting to lifestyle changes such as working from home, temporary job loss or reduced work hours, home-schooling children, and social isolation is challenging, particularly during a time wrought with fear, uncertainty, and stress. For this reason, the United Nations recently warned that a global mental health crisis is looming (Kelland 2020). In general, female reported lower levels of mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic than male across all measures. Four different measures of mental health are considered: self-rated mental health, changes in mental health since physical distancing began, symp- toms consistent with generalized anxiety disorder in the two weeks prior to completing the questionnaire, and life stress. To verify the claim for the University of Ottawa students, a Telfer student took a ran- dom sample of 150 male students of which 45 reported "fair" or "poor" mental health, and a random sample of 200 female students of which 85 reported "fair" or "poor" mental health due to COVID-19 in 2022 winter.
