The Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner. You'll need to read the following sections/chapters this week: 1. In his introduction to the New Edition, Glassner asks "What is the price of fear - and who pays?" How does he answer this question? What connections do you see to the definitions of horror we've been working with so far this semester? 2.Why does fear seem to play such a crucial role in contemporary life? What purposes are served by these misplaced fears? What function do they serve in the culture? Think in terms of social, political and psychological purposes. 3.In his introduction Glassner states, "We had better learn to doubt our inflated fears before they destroy us." What does Glassner mean? What dangers, hardships and costs does he associate with these inflated fears? In what ways do reports of contrived or questionable dangers divert us from what actually puts us at risk? 4.How do more recent events like the pandemic, mass shootings, etc affect Glassner's arguments? Do they strengthen or weaken his overall argument? Why do you think so?
