  1. Construct a frequency distribution of the ages of the Oscar-winning actresses listed in the first table. Start the first class at 20 and make the class width 10. Copy and paste into a WORD document.
  2. Construct a frequency distribution of the ages of the Oscar-winning actors listed in the second table. Use the same class intervals that were used for the frequency distribution of the Oscar-winning actresses. Copy and paste into a WORD document.
  3. Compare the frequency distributions for the Actresses and the Actors. Are there differences between the ages of the Best Actresses and the ages of the Best Actors based on these tables? Explain your answer using complete sentences.
  4. Construct the histogram that corresponds to the frequency distribution from problem 1 and a second histogram that corresponds to the frequency distribution from problem 2.
  5. Compare the histograms for the Actresses and the Actors.Which histogram appears to be closer to a normal distribution? Explain your answer using complete sentences.
  6. Construct a dotplot of the ages of the Oscar-winning actresses and a dotplot of the ages of the Oscar-winning actors. Use the same x-axis.
  7. How does the dotplot of the actresses compare with the dotplot of the actors? Which distribution shows more variability?
  8. Construct a stemplot of the ages of the Oscar-winning actresses and a stemplot of the ages of the Oscar-winning actors
  9. How does the stemplot of the actresess compare with the stemplot of the actors? Where is the highest concentration of ages for actresses? For actors?
  10. Construct a scatterplot using the ages of actresses as the independent variable and the ages of actors as the dependent variable.Based on the result does there appear to be an association between the ages of actresses and the ages of actors? Explain using complete sentences.
  11. Construct a time-series graph of the ages of Oscar-winning actresses. Is there a trend to the ages over time? Are the ages systematically changing over time?
  12. Find the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the ages of the Oscar-winning actresses. The coefficient of variation (CV) for a set of nonnegative sample or population data, expressed as a percent, describes the standard deviation relative to the mean. The formulas are below. It's a good practice to compare two sample standard deviations only when the sample means are approximately the same. When comparing variation in samples with very different means, it is better to use the coefficient of variation. Also, see page 125 in textbook.
  13. for a sample and for a population.
  14. Find the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the ages of the Oscar-winning actors.
  15. What do the means indicate when comparing the ages of Oscar winning Actors to Actresses?
  16. If we want to compare the variation in the two sets of data which statistic should be used: the standard deviation or the coefficient of variation? Explain your reasoning using complete sentences.
  17. Find the 5-number summary of the ages of Oscar-winning actresses.
  18. Find the 5-number summary of the ages of Oscar-winning actors.
  19. Construct boxplots of the ages of Oscar-winning actresses and actors. Put the boxplots on the same scaled axis.
  20. What does a comparison of the boxplots indicate about the ages of Oscar winning Actors to Actresses?
  21. Are there differences between the ages of the Best Actresses and the ages of the Best Actors?

Based on the given data, does it appear that actresses and actors are judged strictly on the basis of their artistic abilities?Or does there appear to be discrimination based on age, with the Best Actresses tending to be younger than the Best Actors? Are there any other notable differences? Be sure to justify your conclusions using the statistical results of questions 1-18, not your feelings or opinion.
