The director of the Orlando Community Center (OCC) was alarmed about the decrease in attendance and the part of some senior participants. Seniors who had been coming to the Center for years were now coming less frequently and some had stopped coming altogether. The center social worker made several home visits to those seniors to discover why attendance was decreasing. The social worker learned that many of the seniors who were able at one time to drive themselves to and from center were no longer able to do so. After several meetings devoted to discussions about the problem, the director and staff concluded that if transportation could be provided to and from OCC, then participation by transportation dependent seniors should increase. The OCC submitted a proposal to the local United Way to fund an experimental senior transportation program. The program would fund ridesharing services to transport seniors to and from the center. The program would operate for six months and then undergo an impact program evaluation. The United Way agreed to fund the transportation program and services were provided for a six month period.
