The elderly memory care industry is a high dollar revenue maker. Rents start anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 a month with the level of care being an additional charge, anywhere from $1000 for a level one person, to $10,000 for a level three person. That in addition to costs like: hair cuts, nail care, and of course dental, eye, hearing, personal supplies like Depends, shampoo, soap, etc, as none of those things are included in the "care" costs. Some of these homes have 5-10 individuals in their care, some as many as 200, or more. Staffing is often difficult to maintain as the actual care providers usually make minimum wage. Consequently, there now appears to be an epidemic of over drugging individuals. Sedatives are given "across the board". People who don't need to be sedated are often drugged into a "zombie" like state. This is even worst in state run facilities where people who can't afford these costs get a state aid, these are folks who's retirement is less than $2300 a month.
