The European Union (EU) or sometimes whispered to be the United States of Europe faced early challenges when the single currency - euro, was introduced in 2002. To most all countries their currency is not "just" currency, but like the flag and even passports, currency is a matter of national pride. Once adopted, the EU became a major economic player. Like a single language, there was a better economic understanding within the marketplace and for the individual consumer. Regulations and consumer protections had its own watchdog in the European Consumer Protection Cooperation. The euro still has it challenges unique to the EU, but also the same that face other currencies. That said, the positives at this point have outweighed the negatives in terms of the convenience to the European people and global travelers. Peer feedback response
