The "FICTIONAL" case studyassignment can be a lot of fun and it will test your creativity as well as your ability to connect your organizational management research and expertise with people and organizational situations, or as my doctoral adviser used to say "factors and actors".

Create a "fictional" organization, fictional employees, and a fictional case study which explores and addresses your organizational theory knowledge within the context of the organization, people, and the situation that you have created. The setting you use could likely be in the industry and organizational setting that you aspire to be a part of now or in the future. You are the UMGC organizational management "consultant" that has been called in to: 1) ascertain the important and relevant "facts," 2) conduct an analysis of the situation (facts), and 3) make recommendations based upon your analysis (according to management and organizational theory literature). Your audience is either senior management of the organization or the board or both. Please address the audience and thank them for hiring you to conduct your research and present recommendations.

The consultant case description, analysis, and recommendations should be between 16-20 slides long or no longer than 15 minutes if you create a video. All assumptions and recommendations should be supported by published theorists (APA style please). You will act as the "management consultant" that has been called in to conduct the case study and help the organization understand itself as well as any actions that may be needed. Presenting some version of yourself beyond your voice is important as you will gain trust by presenting yourself at some point(s) during your presentation. The basis for delivering information and recommendations should be supported by research findings from published theorists and upon the hedgehog expertise acquired by you during the semester!

You are welcome and encouraged to havefunwith your creation! You should focus on areas that may be very challenging and on areas that are particularly noteworthy and represent good decisions and perhaps some folly by management. You may focus on a particular dilemma or situation that the organization has gotten itself into. It is up to you, but you will need to address the factors included in the assignment prompt and rubric. Multiple perspectives are encouraged whenever possible as systems thinking is the basis for effective management.

You have had an opportunity in the weekly discussion to reflect and consider the many experiences that you have had in organizations. You may borrow from your own experiences working in organizations, but please make sure to change organization and personal names if you do. I encourage you to have fun with the organization and with your "cast of characters"!

The week 12 discussion forum is where each case will be presented as a new thread, including a brief abstract about the case and a presentation of the case for all to view (via an attachment or url). A url to Youtube, Prezi, or Vimeo is preferred. The other UMGC consultants will use the conference to read (2 cases minimum) ask questions and provide constructive feedback during week 12. The weekly discussions are practice for the final discussions of your very own case.

The case presentation file about the organization (or the web url) will also need to be posted in your assignment folder as well as in the discussion forum by the end of week 11. The assignment folder is where I will provide feedback and a grade to you about your case. The discussion forum is where I will provide feedback about your critique of two cases and any responses you make about your own case.

As theorists, you are ready to use what you know and have some fun as well.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate knowledge of management practices that increase efficiency and effectiveness in the workplace through behavior and to create your own management strategies. Using your readings and research, you will be asked to demonstrate how knowledge management, strategic thinking, and learning organizations impact organizational effectiveness.

Step 1: Read all the instructions.

Step 2: Create a presentation using PowerPoint, Prezi, or other presentation software that includes 16-20 (do not exceed 20), include audio and, ALL of the following points:

  • Examine how key managers act to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in an organization.
  • Examine management of human capital and how it supports strategic thinking (ST) and the learning organization (LO).
  • Analyze the impact structure and culture have on the creation and maintenance of ST/LO organizations
  • Formulate an inclusion and relationship-building strategy for managers within the organization.
  • Design your own management plan to meet current and future needs. Taking into consideration what you have learned this term (Organizational Structure, Culture, Behavior, etc.) provide at least three strategies that would help the organization move toward the future. For example explain how a manager can predict future challenges (internal & external factors, culture, structure influences, etc.) and what actions they can take to overcome these.
