The First Amendment of the United States reads as follows:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Question Presented:

There has been a heated debate in this country as to the displaying of a Confederate Flag. Opponents and proponents have made arguments supporting their position on this issue. In times of controversy, the legal system is often called upon to provide guidance.

There have been many Confederate flag issues that have been heard in the U.S. court system in various courts across the country. It is expected that, at some point, the United States Supreme Court will be asked to take up this issue. When and if this happens, the U.S. Supreme Court will look to the U.S. Constitution for answers.
