The first sport drink created was Gatorade. It was invented in 1965 by four doctors at the University of Florida Medical School in Gainesville, FL. The doctors were able to conduct their initial experiments with 10 freshman players on the Florida Gators’ (hence the name Gator-Ade) football team during their daily practices. The original formula of the sports drink contained lemon, sugar, and electrolytes. The four doctors were eventually able to test the sports drink with all of the players on the team. In 1967, Gatorade was marketed and sold nationwide. It became a commercialized consumer product in 1983.
