The first stage in the manufacture of sulphuric acid from iron pyrites FeS involves combustion in air:
FeSs Og FeOsSOg
The solid feed contains ww of FeS the remainder being inert material. A excess of air is supplied beyond that stoichiometrically required for the above reaction. This air supply can be taken as vv of O and vv of N All of the FeS reacts so that the solid waste stream contains only FeO and the inert solid from the feed.
i Draw, and fully label, a box diagram for this process.
For each tonne of solid feed supplied, calculate:
ii the volume of air to be supplied at oC and bar pressure;
iii the molar composition of the output gas stream;
iv the volume of output gas to be handled at oC and bar pressure;
v the mass of waste solid produced.
