The first stage in the manufacture of sulphuric acid from iron pyrites (FeS2) involves combustion in air:
2 FeS2(s)+5 O2(g)-->2 FeO(s)+4SO2(g)
The solid feed contains 90% w/w of FeS2, the remainder being inert material. A 50% excess of air is supplied beyond that stoichiometrically required for the above reaction. This air supply can be taken as 21% v/v of O2 and 79% v/v of N2. All of the FeS2 reacts so that the solid waste stream contains only FeO and the inert solid from the feed.
(i) Draw, and fully label, a box diagram for this process.
For each tonne of solid feed supplied, calculate:
(ii) the volume of air to be supplied (at 15 oC and 1 bar pressure);
(iii) the molar composition of the output gas stream;
(iv) the volume of output gas to be handled (at 600 oC and 1 bar pressure);
(v) the mass of waste solid produced.
