The first video,Nova - Dying to be Thin, is a more clinical, documentary-style look at anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, while the second video, a Dr Phil clip, is reflective of a daytime tv show (and is much shorter!). (By the way, the first video is just under an hour, so don't be shocked by the time given. For some reason, the video starts over around the 59 min point, but you have to watch it only once :)
Both have much to offer regarding the deadliest of psychiatric disorders (yes, deadliest!). Do note that the images in theDr. Philclip are quite graphic. Although it was on daytime tv, I will let you be the judge of your own tolerance. If you plan on working with individuals with the disorders we've been learning about, they are not pretty. However,if it issomething you genuinelycannot watch, let me know via email - it's not a problem, just let me know. (This applies only to the Dr. Phil clip!).
(1) From what you saw in the videos, what are some of the "payoffs" of anorexia? "Payoffs" refer to the 'positives' as seen from theperspective of the individual with the disorder. There were examples scattered throughout the NOVA video, with one example being "liked by others". Find at least one other "payoff" from each video. 2 points
(2) A study cited in the Nova video indicated that 80% of females are dissatisfied with their body weight, and the diet industry is booming. Research reported from the Mayo Clinic indicates anorexia has been increasing by 36% every five years since the 1950s. There is also research in your text about body dissatisfaction. Why do you think this is the case? Why are young people (especially young females) dying to be thin? 2 points
(3) Should the young lady from the Dr. Phil clip be legally committed for treatment? Frame your answer using information from the text on involuntary treatment from page 312. If you did not watch the clip, comment on involuntary treatment in general, or use one of the individuals from the NOVA video. 2 point
