The five conflict resolutions are avoiding, competing, accommodating, collaborating, and compromising. These five strategies were developed by Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann to help people handle conflict. The five strategies are "based on the assumption that people choose how cooperative and how assertive to be in a conflict". (The Participation Company, 2021) Conflict is a part of everyday life and everyone has a different way that we like to handle it. The first conflict resolution we're going to look at is avoiding. This is where people ignore the problem and pretend it is not happening. Sometimes when people choose to avoid conflict it is because "the discomfort of confrontation exceeds the potential reward of resolution of the conflict". (The Participation Company, 2021) When avoidance is chosen the problem is not resolved and can cause further issues. The next conflict resolution strategy is competing. Competing is where people are "uncooperative, overly assertive" and "insist on winning the dispute at all costs" (Herrity, 2023) The person with this type of conflict resolution believes that there are only two sides winning and losing, it does not leave room for compromise or a collaborative resolution.
