The Flyers finished their 2014-15 campaign undefeated against their chief rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins but failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three years. However, with a new coach, the Flyers are expected to have a bounce back season in 2015-16. The 2014-15 season represented success off the ice, though, given a loyal segment of the fan base. Specifically, the club grew spectator attendance by 3% and local club revenues by 5%. Ownership and the executive management team are seeking similar growth in the coming 2015-16 season. President/CEO Paul Holmgren attended a number of conferences and seminars regarding growing NHL club revenue throughout the year last season. Holmgren came away from these seminars with the belief that the key to growing local revenues is to continue growing spectator attendance. He has realized the club is missing out on at least $2.5 million in ticket revenue and the associated revenue streams on concessions, parking, merchandise, and souvenirs. Holmgren released last years sales numbers to the staff. In 2014-15 the Flyers sold a approximately 797,000 tickets during the regular season. Wells Fargo Center holds 21,000 spectators; therefore, the Flyers were able to sell 92.6% of the venues capacity. At last years $75 average ticket price, the Flyers were able to earn almost $60 million in ticket revenue. Holmgren has told his staff he expects them to sell 100% of the seats to Flyers games at Wells Fargo Center and increase ticket revenue by $4.7 million in 2015-16. After the meeting, many staff members were filled with nervous excitement.. The Director of Ticket Operations decided he would get a head start on what he assumed his tasks would be. He printed out a total of 6,000 tickets to mid-week games to be distributed by the box office interns as giveaways to get as many people as possible to those games. The season ticket sales manager was also energized. He immediately held a staff meeting to develop a strategy to start selling. He decided he would increase the total number of calls per day from 40 to 50 for each rep. In his meeting he told his sales staff that they needed to spend the next month calling corporations in an attempt to sell full season ticket packages. Additionally, the Director of Marketing and her staff immediately got to work on a promotional calendar that could assist the team in filling the arena each night. She told her staff to identify the games that they felt would be the toughest ones to sell to the marketplace. She would then allocate the best promotions to those games.
