The following data are the median age at first marriage for men and women for the fifty states and Washington D.C. in 2008. The data come from the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. The Center took the data from estimates made by the American Community Survey. For some perspective, the median age at first marriage has gone up over time. In 1950 the median age for first marriage in the U.S. was at 22.8 years old for men and 20.3 years old for women. The following plot is a Box Plot of the Age at First Marriage for Men and Women for the 50 states and Washington D.C. The line connecting the two plots is tied to the Mean for each group. The five number summary is given for each group. Box Plot Of Median Age at First Marriage for Females and Males Max 29.70 Max 31.50 Q3 26.70 Q3 28.60 Med 26.00 Med 27.60 Q1 25.40 Q1 26.90 30 Min 23.50 Min 25.40 28 MedAge 26 K 24 22 Female Male Gender Based on the Box Plots, what could we conclude about the spread of the data for females compared with males. The spread of the data for females is much larger than that for males. The spread for females and for males are similar. The spread of the data for males is much larger than that for females. Box Plots do not show the spread of data
