The following data indicate the percentage freshmen who graduate within six years. Create an SPSS data file using this information. I will show you how to do this in lab. Note you will have three variables: an id number for the school, the school name and the percentage who graduate (pgrad). Label your file txgrad_fl where fl refers to the initials of your first and last name. Once you have created the file, save it on your travel drive. Be sure to check that you have correctly entered the data before continuing the assignment.

Computer Analysis
Click on the top Analyzemenu; from the dropdown menu click on Descriptive Statistics; from the sidebar menu select Frequencies.
Move the pgrad variable to the variable(s) box on the right-hand side of the screen. Then check the Statistics box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. In the central tendency box select mean, median and mode by checking the boxes next to the names. (You may also select the sum measure if you wish.) In the dispersion section of the screen (lower left-hand corner) select the standard deviation (Std. Deviation) and variance.
Print your output which you are to hand in with the rest of the assignment. Be sure to label the output with your name
Hand Calculations
Use the information in your data file to calculate the following statistics by hand: the mode, median, mean, variance, and standard deviation. YOU MUST USE THE COMPUTATIONAL FORMULA given in class to calculate the variance. Show all your work and how you obtained your answers.
Examine the values of the mode, median, and mean. Do the data appear to be symmetrical or are the data skewed? How can you tell? Explain your answer.
Use the formula given in class based on the range to approximate the standard deviation. Is the approximation formula close to the calculated value of the standard deviation?
Explain the meaning of each of these statistics within the context of this specific data set. DO NOT GIVE A GENERIC INTERPRETATION. What do the summary statistics tell you about the percent of Texas college students who graduate in six years?
