The following information has been presented to me in a Case Study book. This book covers over various cases that a "Certified Finance Planner" might see in real life.

The problem with this case is that a good majority of the information we have not covered in class. I was hoping someone could explain to me (in detail if possible), what the information below means. In short, I do not know what kind of information the book is giving me (it is based on a Stock Portfolio and its performance).

The Jackson Stock Portfolio

Stock Quantity Shares FMV Annual Dividend Beta Tax basis
A 100 $30,000 $1.00 1.20 $19,150
B 300 $75,000 $0.30 1.40 $52,452
C 400 $60,000 $0.70 0.90 $43,187
D 250 $35,000 $0.00 1.15 $23,389
$200,000

Recent Returns (Total)

2009 2010 2011 2012 2013
8 10 10 11 8
9 5 (3) 12 15
6 7 7 8 6
7 8 8 9 10

Other Information Given From The Book:

The coefficient of correlation between the market and the stock portfolio is 0.7% over the past five years. The market has yielded a geometric return og 6.8% (what does all of this mean?)

The couple in the book state that they have owned these stocks since January of 2009 and believe that they are all good stocks. The couple wants to know what stocks should be sold to fund either a 529 plan or put the money towards additional IRA contributions.
