There's still almost three months to Chinese New Year, but consumers are urged to start stocking up on seafood for their reunion feasts, as the erratic weather has made it difficult for fishermen to go out to sea. This is the advice from several fishermen associations in Malaysia.
Sekinchan Fishermen and Fish Traders Welfare Association Chia Choon Theng said the weather had turned erratic even though the north-east monsoon had not started. This has caused deep-sea trawlers to reduce their trips out to sea from weekly to once every two weeks.
Weather is not the only factor stopping fishermen from fishing. Price of diesel has gone up to RM4.15 per litre, from around RM3.70 previously. More days out at sea means more diesel burnt by fishing boats, said GM Seafood director Gary Ko. He spends a weekly average of 12 per cent more than a year ago for his fleet of over 40 boats.
This issue is extended to Singapore that consumed 133,400 tonnes of seafood in 2021 with Malaysia being her biggest source of seafood, according to statistics published by the Singapore Food Agency. The Agency added that while the consumption figures for seafood such as fish has been increasing in the recent months, it is not as drastic as the fall in supply.
A spokesman for supermarket chain Sheng Siong said on Wednesday that the price of fish has increased by 10 per cent to 15 per cent. A spokesman for Dairy Farm International (DFI) Retail Group, which runs Giant, responded the same, mirroring the move by Sheng Siong. The third mega supermarket chain, FairPrice spokesman added that it will continue to diversify sources for fresh produce to mitigate further price increase.
