The following is a verbal description of a homicide that has taken place in a garage attached to a residence. The object of this exercise is to determine what type of search pattern is to be employed what type of photos should be taken (from where) and to describe how you would collect the evidence.
Responding to a neighbor's phone call, you arrive at 337 Gavin Lane in Glenn City and discover the entrance to the garage open. It faces south onto a residential street called Gavin Lane. The garage entrance is remotely operated, the width of the opening is 14 feet, and the height of the entrance is 7 feet. The garage is rectangular, measuring 18 feet across the entrance and 14 feet deep. There is one car in the garage facing north. It is in the western stall - a 1997 red Mustang convertible with the top up and the passenger side door ajar (2 inches). The front bumper is 3 inches from the north wall and 2 feet from the west wall. There is a blood smear on the exterior window of the passenger side door (all windows are up) that appears to be a handprint.
The victim is the owner of the car and residence. He is lying face down, head to the south, he is not wearing shoes and is clutching a baseball bat in his right hand. The bat appears to have a blood stain on it. His left foot is 10 feet from the east wall and 9 feet from the south wall. His head is 3 feet, 6 inches from the south wall and 10 feet, 8 inches from the east wall. His right foot is 11 feet, 6 inches from the east wall and 9 feet from the south wall. He is lying in a pool of blood.
On the floor of the garage are what appear to be three 9mm shell casings. Shell casing one is 6 inches from the east wall and 14 inches from the entrance. Shell casing two is 4 inches from the east wall and 10 inches from the entrance. Shell casing three is 18 inches from the east wall and 6 inches from the entrance. All measurements are ninety degrees from the measured surface.
