The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is concerned about laser eye surgery, noting that an industry concerned with correcting vision is spawning joint ventures, holding wine-and-cheese seminars to court potential investors, and creating databases of nearsighted consumers. The corrective laser surgery costs $2,000 per eye and is not covered by insurance. Calls to the available 800 numbers have noted some dissatisfaction among the 700 patients whove had the surgery, including complaints of farsightedness. Further, the only regulation the FDA has in the field covers granting laser manufacturers permission to sell their machines to ophthalmologists.
