The hospital you work in is adopting a new rapid influenza A test for use in outpatient clinics. Your lab directory asked that you verify the claimed predictive values for this test.

The influenza screen was used over four months and all patient samples were confirmed using the 'gold standard' viral culture. The following results were obtained:

Of the 4,000 confirmed negative tests, the new screen successfully identified 3,679 of these patients as negative for influenza A.

Of the 400 confirmed positive patient cultures the screen test successfully identified 389 of these patients as positive.
