The Impact of a Mega-trend As I mentioned in class in Week 2, mega-trends are things that have significant impacts over the very long term. They may have sweeping impacts that emerge well past the typical business planning cycle. But just because they are beyond a Company's 'reach', that doesn't mean they shouldn't be tracked and considered. Do they create an opportunity? Do they create risk? It depends. Most mega-trends you are likely to identify are global in scope, and thus could impact a multinational firm. Hence their relevance to our course. If you wish to undertake this optional extra-credit opportunity, here is how to do so: 1. Identify a megatrend. Do some research about something that will impact our world over a very long time. Anything will work. It could be an economic, political, or scientific thing. The only two that are off limits are the two I referenced in my presentations in Week 2: China's O.B.O.R. and Mega-cities.
