GUIDELINES ON PRESENTATION OF TERM PAPERS BY DIPLOMA STUDENTS OF THE FACULTY OF ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE 1. INTRODUCTION This write up specifies guidelines for administering 'Term Papers" to students of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance who are pursuing a two-year diploma in Accounting, Banking and Finance or Actuarial Science. In furtherance of this, students are to submit a two-page proposal on the selected topic to the assigned supervisor prior to the commencement of writing the complete Term Paper at the beginning of the semester. Students are expected to submit the completed Term Paper by the 11th week of lectures. Allocation of marks or otherwise would be determined by the Department in line with University Specifications on Term Papers. 1.1 RATIONALE It is a viable alternative to the Project Work in that it would enable students slated for this option to apply themselves to the rigors of undertaking research, extensive reading, critical thinking, analysis and writing; all requirements of academic discipline. The Term Papers are to address societal problems and proffer solutions from academia, industry and the subject experts. 1.2. CONCEPT OF A TERM PAPER A term paper is a unique research-based piece of writing that a student undertakes based on a selected or given topic and submits to the tutor at the end of the semester or a specified period. The topics could range from descriptions of events, studies, concepts to arguments in the context of Accounting and Finance. The essence of the term paper is to purposefully steer students' writing to achieve the set goals. 2.0 TERM PAPER RUBRICS i. Cover Page - Student's name, ID, Supervisor's name (if any), date of submission ii. Abstract - This spans from half a page to % of a page. It is to describe the paper, its focus, the issue under discussion and the relevance of the topic. iii. Introduction - This begins with a statement of the topic to be discussed. Students are expected to explain the significance of the problem and indicate how they intend to resolve it. 1
