The importance of the study was the lack of clear concise guidelines for nurses regarding sedation vacation. Also, Summerell learned that nurses had varied perceptions on how and when to perform sedation vacation. The gap analysis used in the study this was effective in providing feedback to the hospitals that participated that led to new order sets on the management of sedation and ventilated patients. Summerell used the Watson Caritas Processes to serve as the basis of the unit's transformation on cultural fit-emphasizing empathy, communication, teamwork, compassion and respect (Snmmerell, 2015).
