The inside and outside walls of a metal processing furnace are held at 800C and 44C, respectively. Its inner wall material and outer insulation layer have thermal conductivities of 2Wm1K1 and 0.03Wm1K1, respectively. It loses 600Wm2 when the outside of the furnace is exposed to air convection at 30C with h =25Wm2K1. If the thickness of the inner wall is 2cm and by assuming one-dimensional heat transfer, steady-state conditions and neglecting the radiation effects: (i) Determine the thickness of the outer insulation layer. (ii) Then, a 50mm thick additional insulation layer with k= 0.15Wm1K1 is added from outside covering the first insulation layer. If the temperature of the inside furnace wall, the surrounding temperature and convection coefficient remain unchanged, determine the new heat flow through a unit cross-sectional area of the furnace wall.
