The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is declared in the Charter of the United Nations (UN) to be the principal judicial organ of the UN. The ICJ under the Charter is given jurisdiction over all cases referred to it by State parties.Once the Court finds that States parties had, under Article 36 (2) of the Court's Statute, accepted the compulsory jurisdiction of the Court, it was scarcely open to the State to suggest that the appropriate forum for dispute resolution laid elsewhere.
