The leader that I focused on for my Historical Leadership Assignment was Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela did an excellent job of empowering his colleagues to take ownership of the cause he was fighting for (anti-apartheid and democracy in South Africa). Mandela accomplished this in a number of ways. He did it through his leadership by example, wanting his followers to follow in his footsteps and fight with peace not violence, through inclusivity and diversity, effective communication, persistance, and the utmost respect for human dignity. Mandela shared these values with his followers, and that lead to them accomplishing the goal that they all had joined together to achieve, which, in my opinion, could not have been completed without Mandela, and his ability to empower those around him for a better South Africa, a trait that would follow him to his presidency and for the rest of his life. Overall, I believe Nelson Mandela is a perfect example of someone who empowered and lead his colleagues and his way of leadership and allowing others around him to take ownership of the cause further cemented his legacy.
