The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) acts as a governing body for interscholastic sports in Michigan. The membership of the MHSAA is over 700 Michigan schools, 80% of which are public schools. The MHSAA is housed within the Michigan Department of Education, and its Executive Director is known as the "State Director of Athletics." MHSAA's handbook, rules, and regulations are part of the Administrative Code of the State of Michigan. The MHSAA regulates interscholastic athletic competition between member schools and sets standards for school membership and eligibility of students to participate in interscholastic athletics.

When Luis Gonzales was fourteen years old and in ninth grade, he presented himself for the girls' field hockey team tryouts at Liberty High School, a public school in Michigan.
