Disapproval of Southern customs and specically slavery played big role as America expanded westward. Most Northern states had abolished slavery by 1800 and opposed its expansion, where as in the South support was higher than ever. The dispute over slavery had been largely fueled by the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, and cotton emerged as the South's main cash crop creating a dependency on slave labor. In the Antebellum South reputation and honor were greatly valued, and as the importance of social hierarchy developed, people got caught up in what became a competition.
