The military creates an environment of unique stressors and expectations that, consequently, increase the chance of an individual being prone to an addiction (NIDA, 2019). Stressors and expectations are, but not limited to, gender dynamics; diversity of the military; deployment and reintegration stressors; and barriers to treatment. The gender and cultural issues of the military population has numerous and significant applications for the experience of addiction and its consequences. Bray et al. (1999) elaborated that traditionally, the military adheres to gender role expectations with men occupying combat-related professions and women in non-combat-related professions, or supportive professions. Due to gender-role expectations, stigma and stereotypes stem out leading military service members prone to addiction (Bray et al., 1999). For instance, Sharp et al. (2015) explained that the stigma of seeking help in the military culture is deemed to be a sign of weakness, which then deter individuals from creating positive coping mechanisms leading to destructive behaviors. Moreover, military service members do not go forward with any type of treatments towards addiction as it can be a hindrance to one's own career (Sharp et al., 2015). Deployment is part of a military lifestyle and it is a crucial component of one's own career
