The most notable differences between immigrants and refugees is; (1) their reasons for leaving their home country, (2) their preparedness to do so, and (3) their destination country's preparedness to care for them. Refugees experience high and persistent thoughts of death as a result of their need for rapid departure from the unsafe situation from their home and are often met with many barriers in their new country (Damiano et al, 2022). This is contrasted by non-refugee immigrants seeking opportunities which can range from the desire to encounter new ideas and people, or a bid to secure financial wealth. Non-refugee immigrants lack as much of an external fear based pressure for their migration and thus are prone to fewer mental health complications compared to their refugee immigrant counterparts (Damiano et al, 2022).
However, both refugee groups benefit from some similar practices. For refugee and non-refugee immigrant children, there are two important factors to consider; (1) holistic health, and cultural awareness. When treating these children help may be best delivered in a less compartmentalized fashion, providing assistance for multiple areas of life from physical to emotional to basic needs from one source may be beneficial for them as it eliminates parent stress and is more in line with many cultures that do not compartmentalize care in the same way that western culture does (McNeely et al, 2020). Cultural awareness will help in gaining informed consent as being sensitive to the wants and needs from diverse cultures will make parents feel more comfortable allowing care for their children to proceed (McNeely et al, 2020). Cultural awareness is also beneficial as it allows counselors to understand where they need to help the bridge the gap between the model of the destination country and the model presented by the refugee's or immigrant's culture allowing for the freedom to exist within without being erased by the dominant culture of the destination country (McNeely et al, 2020)
