The New York Times articlebegins with President Obama asking Steve Jobs why Apple, a company with astronomical profits and a devout following, can't make iPhones in the United States. Overseas manufacturers are not just less expensive, they are also more flexible and dependent. Overseas workers are equally or even more skilled than their American counterparts. Labor and infrastructure would require radical overhauls for iPhones to be built in America. This article provides a good introduction to the complex factors involved in solving U.S. manufacturing difficulties and unemployment. Companies would have to choose to pay higher wages, thus forgoing profits. The U.S. government would have to invest more in factories and other manufacturing infrastructure, as the Chinese government does. All of this would probably mean higher prices and/or higher taxes.
