The Newark Baptist Center is a church with an active congregation located in Essex County, New Jersey. Located on church property is the church building, a 12-room school house used to educate children, and a small administrative building which contains the workspace for 5 part-time church workers. The Church itself was built in 1865 to commemorate the Union victory in the Civil War. In May 2018, due to allergic reactions by some of its congregants and employees, the Church applied for a grant from the State of New Jersey's Historical Grant program, which, in part, funds the rehabilitation of historical buildings owned by non-profits, which have become unsafe due to mold and other hazardous or toxic chemicals. The State of New Jersey rejected the Church's application because the program set a strict policy of denying any application to provide funding for the rehabilitation of religious buildings or properties, regardless of whether they otherwise apply due to the presence of unsafe mold or toxic chemicals.
