The use of a readers' section in online newspapers is not without its own problems. "Anonymity, lack of moderation and minimal censorship may lead to inappropriate use of language, thereby impeding substantive and constructive discussion" $($Manosevitch & Walker, $2009,$ p$.7).$ Santana $(2014)$ studied the effect of anonymity on civility in online newspaper reader comment boards. The study noted that $53\%$ of the comments in sites that allowed participants to be anonymous included language that was vulgar, racist, profane or hateful. On the other hand, sites that required participants to use their names had only $29\%$ comments that were deemed uncivil. In fact, some scholars $($Ng & Detenber, $2005$; Spears & Lea, $1994)$ argue that the distanciation, isolation and anonymity encourage uncivil behaviour amongst participants and dissuade others from taking part in online discussions.
