The pavement section for a new road that has a length of 5 miles is to be constructed on the central coast of California. The road will be classified as a state conventional highway (2-lane). Three alternatives are considered as follows: Alt 1: 20-year Flexible (HMA) 6-in HMA (Type A) 12-in AB class 2 8-in ASB class 1 Alt 2: 20-year Flexible (HMA/OGFC) Same as Alt 1 with 0.10-ft OGFC as wearing course Alt 3:20-year JPCP 8-in PCC slab 6-in CTB The following unit cost can be used: HMA type A = $110/ton OGFC = $100/ton Concrete pavement (rapid set) = $200/CY Aggregate base class 2 = $35/CY Aggregate subbase class 1 = $20/CY CTB = $60/CY The 2010 Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) Manual of Caltrans will be used. The maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) schedule adopted by Caltrans to be used in the analyses is attached. Also, the costs for future maintenance and rehabilitation activities are attached for your use. Default values from LCCA manual can be used and other data required can be discussed with the instructor. A 4.0% discount rate will be assumed.
