The performance profiling assignment is designed to help you examine important psychological skills objectives and to help you implement a psychological skills training (PST) program for yourself. This is in alignment with the first overall goal of this course: to investigate how psychological factors influence involvement and performance in sport, exercise, therapeutic, and physical education settings. As you enter this assignment, it is hoped you will identify some of your strengths and weaknesses and learn how you could apply psychological skills training to improve performance in a particular sport or non-sport area of your life.
Skills: This assignment will help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course and in professional and personal life beyond school:
- Deciding what to work on to improve in a particular skill.
- Gaining awareness of psychological skills that could improve your performance.
- Setting goals for yourself
- Taking responsibility for your own development
Knowledge: This assignment will help you to become familiar with the concept of psychological skills training and its implementation.
Task: You will be asked to identify a variety of skills that you believe have some relation to performance for a sport or some other activity in which you engage. I suggest you focus mainly on 5-8 psychological skills. You could examine your performance in a sport or other specific area in your life (academics, music performance, job, exercise, etc). Examples of mental skills include confidence, determination, stay positive, self-talk, mental preparation, concentration...etc. It is important you pick the skills important for your situation. Continue to follow the instructions in the My Performance Profile document.
Criteria for Success:
The student who genuinely completes all parts of the profile to the best of her/his ability, with little or no spelling/grammatical errors will likely do well on this paper. You may include a few physical, tactical, and technical skills, however, your emphasis should be on psychological skills. Remember to provide a written summary of your results.

- After listing these factors, go to the second page of this activity and write each factor on the outside edge of each section of the pie graph. Also list these factors in critical mental factors column of the chart below.
- Using the pie graph, rate the degree to which you have each skill from 0 (not at all) to 10 (completely) by coloring in the rings that correspond to your rating. Also write these ratings in the individual skill rating column in the chart below.
- Set up a chart as shown below:
Critical mental factors | Perceived level of importance of each mental factor 1-10 (PLI) | Individual skill rating for mental factors 1-10 (ISR) | Discrepancy (10 - ISR) x PLI |
- Rate your perceived level of importance of each critical mental factor in the chart above. Calculate and enter the discrepancy according to the equation provided.
- Generate action points as to how you will improve the two or three skills that have the largest discrepancy values.
- Discuss barriers that you may need to overcome as you work to improve the skills discussed in item 6.
