The Philippines is the first "Asia's Constitutional Democracy" after the revolutionaries declared it as an independent state on July 12, 1898. The democracy, as described by Nwogu (2015), is associated with the "right to suffrage", which is also stated in the 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines- Article V, since it relates to how all eligible citizens retain sovereign authority, although political power is exercised indirectly through elected representatives.
