The Piikani nation is located on the south of Calgary, neighboring the town of Pincher Creek. The nation is known as "North Peigan" after the border closed off connection to the South Peigan in Montana. The nation has exhibited economic development from oil and gas partnerships, to hosting many wind turbines on their nation. Piikani Nation Economic Development department has also supported small business growth in the community over the years. Chief and Council - The Chief of the Piikani nation has just signed a deal with the Alberta Government to access the Grassy Mountain area in the reserve's west side. The Alberta government expressed interest in mining activities in the area, promising the community jobs and economic prosperity. There was no vote held to gather support from the nation members for this project. Government - With the removal of mining restrictions in the province, the government was aiming to grow a coal mining industry within the province. Their goal was to stimulate Alberta's economy which heavily relies on its environmental resources. The official opposition party was opposed to this idea of reinstating coal mining activities. Market growth and trends - Benga Mining was going to take on the project in the Grassy Mountain area. The project was proposed to be a 25-year project with an anticipated production of 4.5 million tonnes of coal processed each year in that time (Grassy Mountain Coal Project, n.d.) Unsatisfied Members - Many nation members opposed the project and decision of partnering with the government to proceed with the project. The Chief of the nation noticed action taking place with members speaking with different media outlets about their opposition. The Chief then wrote an open letter, and shared it with media and industry stating that only the Chief has the right to speak on behalf of the nation. The Chief went on the express full nation support of the project. One Piikani nation member that opposed the mining project formed the "Mountain Child Valley Society" or "Miistakii Pookaw Awahhkoii Kanakkaatsi" which included close to 400 nation members. The group received its name from a community elder, and received advising from nation elders in terms of opposing the mining project. In August 2021 the project was ordered to cease operations based on the Environmental Assessment Act, 2012
