The primary function of the brake pedal is to facilitate the pressurisation of the twin master cylinders, which react against the force application from the driver's foot. The brake pedal can see significant loading - many multiples of the driver's mass - during braking. The pedal pivots on a set of bearings near its base while the driver's foot applies force on a pedal face which is wide enough to accommodate the foot. It is important to note that the loading from the foot can be offset to either side of the pedal face
