The problem related to IoT data and lifecycle of parts. IoT data is pulled from functioning devices and can contain meta data. With this in mind, IoT provides an avenue for Embedded Intelligence to be collected which consists of sensors, social behaviors, and interaction enabling individual intelligence, spatial intelligence, and social intelligence (Guo, B., Zhang, D., & Wang, Z., 2011). Pertaining to the industrial side of IoT, IoT provides sensor or collected data that would otherwise not be readily available and not a result of the intended use of a device.

An example of prediction of lifecycle of industrial equipment, which can be a result of sensor readings on motors which provide torque or vibration feedback. Torque readings generally are used to help determine power output, but in the case where operational range exceeds intended or normal performance, data can be collected to help determine possible causes or expected failures. This allows companies to predict, manage, and mitigate downtime, reducing costs and unexpected and unplanned disruptions to production.

A second example pertains to wearable technology by humans. Wearable technology allows data to be "mined" and used to detect physical activity and communication and behavioral technology (Guo, B., Zhang, D., & Wang, Z., 2011). Another emergent example from wearable technology was used to help predict the onset of COVID-19 several days in advance of a diagnosis as a result of heart rate changes (Talha, 2022). Technology designed to show basic sensory data has been turned into a diagnostic health system.

A third example of the emergence of IoT is the advent of internet-based home security. Devices such as Ring or Blink allow users to have real-time video and audio of cameras installed at a household or business. With the ability to connect to the internet to view clips and store data on the cloud, Ring Neighbors, for example, allows people to share security footage in an app-based setting to inform neighborhoods and law enforcement of activity that might be of use or warrant attention (Cericola, 2021). The intent of a cloud and internet based private home security system has shown to be useful as a neighborhood watch tool.
