The Project background As a fluid process engineers, you and your team are intending to design a water supply system for any local residential areas of Tshwane municipality The team's goal is to design a water system which will be able to efficiently sustain the everyday water supply needs of the future residents since their means of supply are through shallow wells and water supply trucks only. The community is owned by the Municipality of Tshwane. Assuming that the community of choice has a total area of 54, 312 square meters. A total of 631 units. The residential piece of land includes amenities like elementary school, church, military camp and barangay hall. All units are assumed to be residential so the project is intended only to design the water supply and distribution system for domestic use and shall therefore conform to the standards stated within the governing Codes of the Southern Africa in relation to water supply and distribution system. The team considers multiple constraints such as economical and sustainability in order for them to satisfy what the client wants. The client is concerned about the duration so that the residents will not be having a hard time in their water supply Project Objectives The Fluid process engineers aims to achieve the following objectives GENERAL This design project is intended to provide the students the knowledge and skills of making use of Process Fluid Flow principles to design a water supply and distribution system which will be able to efficiently sustain the everyday water supply needs of the target community SPECIFIC 8 9 10 11.12.13-14 2015 SPECIFIC Design a detailed water supply and distribution system that caters to the required water quantity demand of the community (considering the future demand due to population growth) in accordance with the codes and standards. (see an example of water supply system design from Tshwane water treatment plant to Mamelodi township in Figure 1) Perform continuity and energy balances for the entire system Collect justifiable materials and their properties to be used in your system design . Calculating the total head losses of the entire system Decide what kind of bends and get their respective loss coefficients from literature (also include losses due to expansion/contraction). . Now calculate total power required . Based on the total head loss, select the number of pumps and their ratings that will consume less energy and Determine whether the community will afford the water by comparing their budget for water supply against electricity cost (Provide the estimated cost of the project to see that the design is economically reasonable) The Client The client of the project is any Tshwane community of your choice.
