The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate your understanding and ability to identify project management concepts as discussed in class. To make this fun, you will watch a movie and evaluate the areas of project management as they were applied in the film. This is NOT a plot analysis, you are looking at what is happening from a project management viewpoint. This is about the project in the movie NOT about making the movie!!
The Assignment
Choose a movie from the following table. If you choose to stream through GC Library, you will have to activate your sign-in first. Follow the instructions at the end of the assignment for more information about GC Criterion On Demand.
Grading 50 marks
Level of detail, organized writing style, correct grammar, and spelling will be factored into the grades.
- Introduce the movie and provide background. What is the 'project' that is being carried out? NO IMDB synopsis! (5 marks)
- Choose 4 of the following Project Management knowledge areas. Describe what the characters did to demonstrate the project management concepts (be specific) - you will need to reference scenes in the movie. Use headers to separate the four knowledge areas. (4 marks each x 4 = 16)
- Critically evaluate how they performed in each of those areas. What worked - what could have gone better. Include this with #2 under the same heading. (4 marks each x 4 =16)
Answer both #2 and #3 under the same heading.
- Finally, provide an overall summary which evaluates the entire project in its totality.
(8 marks)

Project Management Knowledge Areas CHOOSE 4
- ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - Identify people, groups or organizations that could impact or be impacted by the project. Analyze stakeholder expectations and their impact on the project.
- DEFINING THE PROJECT (SCOPE) - define the project using a Project Scope Checklist. Include limitations and items excluded from the project. Discuss the various stages of the project from a project management perspective.
- WORK BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE - identify all tasks that need to be completed for a successful mission and discuss the timing, sequencing and dependency of each.
- RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (TIME AND MATERIALS) - where and how were materials procured? What was the time available for the project and identify events that affected timing.
- TASK RESPONSIBILITY MATRIX - for all major tasks, identify who was responsible for their completion, who was responsible for supporting. Identify also any conflicts and how they were addressed.
- COMMUNICATION PLAN - identify who needed to know what information, with what frequency and what method of communication was used. Identify any challenges in the communication plan.
- MANAGING EFFECTIVE PROJECT TEAMS - Describe the techniques used to build an effective project team and discuss (good or bad) how successful they were.
- RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN - What risks were involved in this project, their likelihood of occurring and potential impact? What was the plan for handling each risk?
- PROJECT CLOSURE - characterize the type of project closure and determine if there was customer acceptance. Evaluate team and individual performances. In the final evaluation of the project - was it a success or not? Can the learnings be transferred to future projects?
