The purpose of this case is to come up with a contingency plan[s] in order to sustain the program “Move With Me,” a program that serves thousands of community members throughout Lower Manhattan. The case study deals with a current board member who is under investigation by the Supreme Court over mishandling of his clients financials.
ALBERTO VILAR CASE STUDY Experimental Theater Productions (ETP) is a mid-size nonprofit performing theatre arts organization with an annual operating budget of 1.5 million dollars. The mission of the organization is to provide live theater performances to the community of Lower Manhattan. The organization has a specialized program called “Move With Me,” a movement and theater program helping handicap children to improve their communication skills. The program uses methods such as the use of simple acting techniques, imitation of sounds, and free-flow body movements to help them confront their communication deficiencies. In addition, the program is well received by the community and it’s been running successfully for the last 10 years. The operating budget to run the program (Move With Me) is $250,000 annually.
In the past two years, even though the program is well received and successful, Move with Me is not receiving enough funding support from the government, foundations and corporations in order to cover its operating cost and expenses. Alberto Vilar, a current board member, believes that the program is very special and is worthwhile continuing. Mr. Vilar, who is very passionate about the program, has promised to donate $500,000.00 for the next 2 years in order to save the program. During the board meeting, the board moved to accept Mr. Vilar’s promised donation of $500,000. Mr. Vilar is to deliver the contribution within the next 2 years. In addition, the board also move to nominate Mr. Vilar as the next Board President, which he gladly accepted the position. At the end of the meeting, Experimental Theater Production has a new Board President – Mr. Alberto Vilar. After few weeks, the scandal of Mr. Vilar’s embezzlement and fraudulent case was all over the news, media, and television. A trial is set for Mr. Vilar in the federal court of justice.
After hearing the scandal:
1) Get together with your original group team members.
2) What is your management team’s first reaction? See below list below for EP’s Management Team.
3) Determine your team’s first course of action? Are you going to keep or fire Mr. Vilar from the Board?
4) Propose a contingency plan to the Board – write and submit not more than 2 pages of proposal.
5) Finally, present your case to the Board (in this case, the Board is the class).
The goal of this assignment is to create an action plan [damage control] and propose it to the Board of Directors. Your team will write up a 1-2 page proposal and will present your case during the Board meeting.
