The question was asked from my syllabus:
"The Invisible Hand Can Park Your Car". The law of supply and demand and price effects on producer surplus relate to the trial policy described in the article. Discuss how the principles of economics are seen at work in this article.
My answer/response to the question:
The invisible hand can park you care was a good read that should a deep understanding of what the city is is trying to accomplish. I have been to San Francisco a few years ago. My family and I did not rent a car but just used public transportation and walk to each of our destinations. Big cities have a lot of people from the outside coming into the city to work. The traffic and the lack of parking is something that all major cities deal with in a way. I did like the parking meter fi the trend and raising the price based on the usage of the car parking on the street. When the demand was high the prices would rise. Ido believes people would still pay those expensive prices if they had to but could still find free parking somewhere. Me living in Japan when I got to the city of Naha, which is a big city for us, I have to pay for parking but I don't. I bought this car and I have to pay for parking. "My father didn't pay for parking, my mother, my brother, nobody. It's like going to a prostitute. Why should I pay when, if I apply myself, maybe I can get it for free?"(Mankiw 2018). That makes no sense in my eyes. San Francisco did explain that the money goes to public transportation for the people. The city is doing a great job of trying to be efficient in creating parking for all. I see the consumer surplus and producer surplus as hitting the middle ground for the people in the city. The parking spots closer to the popular areas will at times be expensive but the parking a little farther away may not be all that bad. Just have to walk a little more.
